Bacteriostatic Water
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water that contains a preservative—usually 0.9% benzyl alcohol—to inhibit the growth of bacteria.
Use:
Primarily used to dilute or dissolve medications for injection.
Common in hormone therapy, peptide injections, and other medical settings.
"Bacteriostatic" means:
It prevents bacteria from growing, but doesn’t kill existing bacteria.
Why the preservative?
The benzyl alcohol allows multiple uses from the same vial over a short period (usually up to 28 days after first use).
This is different from sterile water for injection, which must be used once and discarded.
Not for:
Neonates (newborns)—due to risk of benzyl alcohol toxicity.
Large volume injections—it's intended only for reconstituting small doses.
